PELVIC FLOOR THERAPY

PHYSICAL THERAPY

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy (PFPT) is a specialized area of physical therapy that addresses dysfunction in the pelvic floor—a group of muscles at the base of the pelvis that play an essential role in core stability, bladder and bowel function, sexual health, and movement coordination.

When the pelvic floor isn’t functioning optimally, it can contribute to pain, instability, and changes in function that affect daily life, training, and performance. PFPT focuses on restoring strength, mobility, coordination, and confidence — always with care, consent, and education at the center.

    • Pelvic pain (hips, tailbone, low back, sacroiliac joints, abdomen, genital pain)

    • Bladder and bowel concerns (incontinence, urgency, frequent urination, constipation, IBS, painful bladder syndrome)

    • Sexual function concerns (pain with intercourse, changes in arousal)

    • Pregnancy and postpartum recovery (pain, prolapse, diastasis recti, stress incontinence)

  • Performing artists place unique demands on their bodies—and the pelvic floor is no exception. Several factors can increase the likelihood of pelvic floor dysfunction in performers, including:

    • High-impact activity with limited rest and recovery

    • Hypermobility leading to decreased stability

    • Technique habits involving excessive gripping of the core or deep hip muscles

    • High stress environments and the pelvic floor’s close relationship with the nervous system

  • Because the pelvic floor works in coordination with the diaphragm, abdominal muscles, hips, and spine, dysfunction can show up as back pain, hip pain, instability, or changes in performance — even when symptoms don’t feel “pelvic” at first.
